The New Teacher Academy at CEE

The Center for Early Education, a leader in early childhood and elementary education, launches a New Teacher Academy in September 2024, starting with its first cohort of teachers.
The New Teacher Academy aims to support new and young teachers in obtaining experience and earning credentials.

  • Hands-on teaching responsibilities in Early Childhood and Elementary classrooms
  • Access to mentor teachers and lifelong learning opportunities
  • Earn a teaching credential by the end of the third year
  • Specialized professional development, workshops, and programming
The Center for Early Education’s New Teacher Academy invites individuals seeking to begin careers in education to participate in our three-year program designed to prepare aspiring teachers for the classroom. Academy participants will become teaching residents and members of The Center’s Instructional Support Team.

The New Teacher Academy provides teaching residents with training, exposure, and the opportunity to grow in ways to benefit their professional development as teachers. The program promotes a mentorship culture in the classroom, benefitting teachers and students in the form of increased mutual support, dedication to the school community, and focus on wellbeing and collaboration.
The CEE New Teacher Academy is a three-year residency model program in which new teachers engage in credential coursework while holding teaching positions at The Center and gaining access to The Center’s professional development, mentorship, and community resources.

Prospective teachers begin the program as members of CEE’s Instructional Support team, who are assigned to various classrooms throughout the school day. Instructional Support faculty create and implement developmentally appropriate activities for Early Childhood and Elementary students, support classroom teachers, supervise children, fill in as substitute teachers when needed, and help with classroom management and organization.

Over the course of the three-year program, participants gradually earn more responsibilities and complete coursework with the goal of becoming fully credentialed teachers at the end of the three years.

Year 1

Instructional Support Team Placement; Introduction to Learning Culture, School, Community
  • Year 1 serves as an introduction to the school community and culture
  • Teaching residents will serve as Instructional Support Team members, providing general support for teachers and students in grade levels across the school
  • Provide supervision for both recess and daycare, forming trusting relationships with students and faculty

Year 2

Classroom Placement with Mentor Teachers plus Ongoing Credential Coursework
  • In years two and three, teaching residents will be assigned mentor teachers who will support our residents as they take on greater classroom and teaching responsibilities. They will create and lead instruction, interface with parents, and review instructional data as they begin their tenure in the classroom. During this period, residents will also be enrolled in a credentialing program, so that halfway through their third year in the Academy, they receive their teaching credentials and are ready to lead a classroom of their own the following year.

Year 3

Full-Time Classroom Teaching plus Ongoing Credential Coursework

Teaching Credential Partner

    • CSU Baskersfield

Remote credential coursework will be conducted in partnership with the Black Educator Teacher Residency at CSU Bakersfield
